Date Sold 4/29/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Linenbacked Advertising Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 39 3/4" [72 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) The Saturday Evening Post, the national magazine that was similar to Life magazine (which it preceded by over 200 years, because it was first published by Benjamin Franklin in 1728!), but which had more of a literary bent to it, with stories and condensed novels by notable authors, but with many well illustrated articles on current events and pop culture. The covers were always by "name" artists, and legendary artist Norman Rockwell became closely associated with the magazine and did more covers for them than almost anyone. The magazine was printed on a high quality paper stock, while many of its competitors were printed on "pulp" paper, so the issues of this magazine survive better and are of a much better quality. Artist: Norman Rockwell Important Added Info: Note that this poster was displayed at newsstands to encourage people to purchase the then-current issue of The Saturday Evening Post. This was a very special issue they were advertising, because it featured Norman Rockwell art, and it was a special "April Fool's Day" cover. One thinks of Rockwell as a pretty serious man, illustrating classic American scenes of then every day life, but this cover is much more in the "Mad Magazine" vein, with Rockwell signing his signature backwards, and a number of outrageous "mistakes" throughout the art! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had a horizontal tear running across the middle right of the poster and a 4" tear near the middle of the left border. There were tears in the top left corner that detached that area from the rest of the poster. There was a horizontal crease in the bottom half of the right 2" of the poster, and some tiny stains and tiny tears around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
