War Brides, the 1916 Herbert Brenon ("Sole author and director of 'A Daughter of the Gods'") silent romantic anti-war family relationship melodrama ("A story of greater tragedies than those of the trenches"; a really strange story of an imaginary country, where four brothers are drafted, leaving behind their mother, sister, and one of their wives; all four are killed in battle, and the war widows are ordered to marry soldiers, so that there will be more soldiers for the next generation; when the lead widow, who is pregnant by her dead soldier husband, says that she will refuse to obey the law, the king of the country says that she must, and she kills herself, and all the other widows vow to continue her anti-war hopes) starring Alla Nazimova ("In a photodramatic version of Marion Craig Wentworth's play"; billed as "Nazimova"), Charles Hutchison (he starred in a series of silent serials where he always played the character "Hurricane Hutch") , Charles Bryant, William Bailey, and Richard Barthelmess
