the circa 1928 local theater window card giving the movies that were playing for the upcoming week at the Colonial Haver Hill theater: Glorious Betsy, the 1928 Alan Crosland historical biographical France romantic melodrama (based on the true story of Napoleon's brother Jerome, who went to the U.S. and fell in love with a Southern belle, and he married her and took her back to France, and Napoleon had the marriage annulled, and sent the belle back to the U.S.) starring Dolores Costello (in the title role as Betsy Patterson), Conrad Nagel (as Jerome Bonaparte), John Miljan, Marc McDermott, and Pasquale Amato (as Napoleon Bonaparte). Note that this movie was a partial talkie and originally had two sound sequences, but while the movie still exists, the sound has been lost. Also note that the play this movie was based on had an artificial happy ending that did not happen in real life. In the play and movie, Betsy returns to France and Jerome runs off with her, and she has his baby! ANDVarsity, the 1928 Frank Tuttle college romantic family relationship comedy (about an alcoholic janitor at Princeton University, and he helps an orphan get into the college, and he acts as his "guardian angel"; in his second year, the young man gets drunk after a fight with his girlfriend and loses the class' money gambling, but the janitor takes the blame, and helps him all the way until he graduates, and he marries his girlfriend, and he never does learn that the old alcoholic who helped him so much was actually his father!) starring Charles 'Buddy ' Rogers, Mary Brian, Chester Conklin, Phillips Holmes, and Robert Ellis. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. Note that Phillips Holmes had made an impression in some movies in the late 1920s. In 1931, he would get the lead in the first version of "An American Tragedy", which made it seem like he would become a major star, but that didn't materialize. He had a major affair with Libby Holman, but that was certainly complicated, and when they broke up, she immediately married his brother! Oddly, years later, Holman would have another very complicated affair with Montgomery Clift, who played the same part in the remake of "An American Tragedy", re-titled "A Place in the Sun". Sadly, Holmes died in a plane crash in 1942. I am very surprised no one has made a movie about his life, or a joint movie about him and Libby Holman!

Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 17 1/4" x 22 1/4" [44 x 57 cm]. Also note that this window card was surely made by a local theater, and not by the studio, even though there is studio information on the card.

Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. Some of these items can ONLY be sent in flat packages, and could not possibly be rolled into a tube. On some of them (for example f it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube, like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled.
