An Original 1938 (from the first release of this movie in Germany) Vintage German Film Program (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm]; 8 pages) (Learn More)

Atarashiki tsuchi (literally translates to "The New Earth"), the 1937 Arnold Fanck & Mansaku Itami Japanese/German interracial romance romantic melodrama (about a Japanese man who has lived in Europe for years and who returns to his homeland, intending to marry a white woman, but his father, Sessue Hayakawa, wants him to marry a Japanese girl he chooses, and he is faced with the age old choice of following his heart or his father's wishes; note that co-director Arnold Fanck was a German director who made "mountain films", and he went to Japan and co-directed this movie, and naturally, he insisted on adding long scenes of Japan's most beautiful mountains!) starring Setsuko Hara, Ruth Eweler, Sessue Hayakawa, Isamu Kosugi, and Eiji Takagi. Note that this is a "conditional" movie. This refers to around 40 movies that were made in Germany between 1933 and 1945, during the time the Nazis were in power in Germany. These movies are considered to be propaganda movies, which glorify the Nazi regime and their ideals. Immediately after World War II, a list of over 100 movies that were made between 1933 and 1945 was created, and those movies were not allowed to be shown at any time in Germany or Austria. Over the next decade, around 60 of those movies were taken off the list so that they are allowed to be shown (but rarely are), and those movies are known as "forbidden movies", because even though they can now be shown, they could not be shown at all in the years right after World War II. The remaining 40 or so movies (including this one) are known as "conditional" movies, because they are still not allowed to be shown in Germany or Austria, even in the present day, with the sole exception being when they are shown in an educational context, like at a university, and a speaker talks before and after the movie. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info: Note that this item has been trimmed and it now measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm]. Also note that we have pictured the front cover, the back cover, and an interior 2-page spread from this program.

Condition: good. The program was once in a bound volume and it was slightly trimmed on the top and bottom (which affects the small writing at the top of the cover), and there is the tiniest of paper loss and glue residue in the border where it was once attached to the bound volume.
