An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Story of Louis Pasteur, the 1936 William Dieterle (this is one of five biographical movies Dieterle directed for Warner Bros.) historical France medical research biography ("He gambled his daughter's life... that our children might live."; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; a fictionalized version of the life of Louis Pastuer, the French inventor of pasteurization and the first vaccine against rabies) starring Paul Muni (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Louis Pasteur), Josephine Hutchinson, Anita Louise, Donald Woods, Fritz Leiber, Henry O'Neill, Porter Hale, and Akim Tamiroff. Note that Warner Bros. was worried that this "talky" melodrama about the life of a scientist would be "box office poison", and they use an image of Paul Muni looking menacing for the paper advertising, perhaps trying to trick the public into thinking the movie was something it was not! Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this half-sheet, which has a completely different image from the one-sheet! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Also note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thinner paper backing, it COULD be sent rolled, but we would MUCH prefer to send it in a large flat package (because we fear that rolling it, even into a wide tube, would have an excellent change of damaging it, so we will only send it in a tube if the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage), but otherwise, we will ship it in a very large flat package, so bear that expense in mind before bidding on this poster. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had surface paper loss scattered in the left blank border and in the top blank border, with a much lesser amount in the bottom blank border. The image area was in really nice condition. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. Someone put restoration paint in the borders, but did not make an effort to blend it a lot, or else it was done a long time ago and it has aged differently.
