An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More)

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the classic 1920 John S. Roberson silent horror thriller ("By Robert Louis Stevenson") starring John Barrymore ("The Screen's Greatest Actor in a Tremendous Story of Man at His Best and Worst"; in the title roles), Martha Mansfield, Brandon Hurst, Charles Lane, and Cecil Clovelly. Note that there were several obscure silent movies based on this classic story starting in 1908. In 1920, Barrymore starred in this version, and there was a different English language version made that same year, and also a German language version, and all three movies had different casts and producers! Also note that Barrymore performed the initial transformation scene into Mr. Hyde without special effects!

Important Added Info: Note that original 1920 movie paper of any sort from this movie is unbelievably rare! In all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned a glass slide, a single still, and several magazines that contained ads for this movie, before we were consigned this wonderful window card! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had a semi-circular area of paper loss near the middle left of the image. The face of the person there and the border line next to it was missing. Otherwise, the card had small paper loss scattered in the blank borders, but fortunately, only blank white paper was affected, and not even any of the border of the small writing at bottom. The entire card had darkened around the edges and there was darkening in the top center that extended into the word "ZUKOR". There was a tear in the bottom right corner that separated that corner, slightly extending into the corner of the background. There were a few scuffs and smudges in Barrymore's black jacket and a few smudges and scuffs scattered in the rest of the card. Overall, the window card was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. A really expert restorer paperbacked the card and did minimal restoration to the above defects, expertly repainting the missing small face at lower left, and the border line next to it. From any reasonable viewing distance, the card looks fantastic, and even from close up, you don't get a sense of it being "restored". I am certain the new owner will be thrilled to display this wonderful window card on their wall!
