An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Herald (measures 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" [9 x 14 cm] when folded; 4 pages) (Learn More) Liliom, the 1930 Frank Borzage sideshow carnival romantic love triangle crime tragic fantasy reincarnation melodrama ("All talking Fox Movietone drama"; based on the play by Ferenc Molnar; about a carnival barker who falls in love with a pretty young girl, and he is fired by the owner of the carnival, who is an older woman who was sweet on him; he gets his girlfriend pregnant, and the only way he can think of to support her is to steal money, and he is killed during a hold up; but the story doesn't end there!; he is tried in Heaven, and ten years later, he is allowed to return to Earth for one day to try to make amends, and he meets his daughter, but nothing goes right for him; if this all sounds VERY familiar, it is because it was later used to make the classic 1950s musical "Carousel"!; it was also re-made just three years later in France starring Charles Boyer and directed by Fritz Lang) starring Charles Farrell (in the title role as Liliom), Rose Hobart, Estelle Taylor, H.B. Warner, and Lee Tracy. Note that the movie was supposed to have Janet Gaynor as the female lead (she had previously starred with Farrell in "Seventh Heaven", but she was in a contract dispute, and did not make the movie). Also note that Charles Boyer was a college graduate with a philosophy degree, and he appeared in a few movies in his early 20s. He had greater success in talking movies, thanks to his distinctive French accent (which Chuck Jones "borrowed" for his character Pepe Le Pew), but he had his greatest success in Hollywood in the early 1940s, when many of the top U.S. stars were away in World War II.
