An Original Vintage Theatrical Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

Moon Over Miami, the 1941 Walter Lang Florida Everglades romantic musical ("Adaptation by George Seaton and Lynn Starling from a play by Stephen Powys"; "Lyrics and Music by Leo Robin & Ralph Rainger"; about two Texas girls losing an inheritance because of taxes and they travel to Miami to find rich husbands) starring Don Ameche, Betty Grable, Robert Cummings (Bob Cummings), Charlotte Greenwood, Jack Haley, Carole Landis, Cobina Wright Jr., Fortunio Bonanova, and Jack Cole. Note that Alberto Vargas did the artwork for the cover of the pressbook and the 24-sheet only on this movie, and both bear his signature. The pressbook explains that Vargas was commissioned to paint this image. Nowhere does it state that he did any of the other art for the movie, even though one of the one-sheets and the insert are often described as being Vargas art. It is my opinion that they are NOT drawn by Vargas, and certainly the pressbook backs that up.
NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this insert, and that was 7 years ago, when it sold for $2,150! Also note that this insert and also the style A one-sheet (which has a "pinup" image of a sexy Betty Grable-like blonde, standing full-length in a skin-tight outfit!) has often been incorrectly attributed to Alberto Vargas. Actually, he solely did the 24-sheet for this movie, and the artist for the style A one-sheet (and this look-alike insert) did the art "in the Vargas style", which has caused this incorrect attribution. But it still is certainly wonderful art, and we wish we knew whose art it is, so that we could credit that person!

What IS gelbacking? Learn More

Condition: good to very good. The poster had tape on the back of the middle right that was removed, causing surface paper loss on the back of Grable's green swimsuit. One area was slightly above her waist, and the other was slightly below her waist, and there were some stains on the front of those areas. There was a tear in the right border that extended to above the bottom area of surface paper loss, and down into the center of it. The poster had a similar surface paper loss on the back of the center of the word "HALEY" at bottom right, and below that, slightly affecting the "T" of "WRIGHT", and there was a tear running from the right border through the bottom of Haley's credit and into the "OD" of "GREENWOOD". Other than these unusual defects, the poster has tiny paper loss in the bottom of the "N" of "MOON" and a crease in the second "mi" of "Miami", and it had minor wear on the folds. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to restoration. A really talented restorer gel backed the poster (meaning they backed the poster onto a gel material) and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, so that the poster still looks and feels like an original poster (and it is!), with no backing at all. Given the poster's defects described above, the restorer did a wonderful job, because I would think the vast majority of people would have no idea that this poster has had the restoration it has had, and the poster will display well on the new owner's wall (see our super-sized images to get a good sense of exactly how the poster looks now). However, bear in mind the restoration this poster has had before placing a bid on it
