A Paperbacked French Travel Poster (measures 24 1/4" x 39 1/2" [62 x 100 cm]) (Learn More)

Combloux, the 1936 French travel poster encouraging people to visit the P.L.M. hotel (built by the Paris Lyon Mediterranee Railway company) in the French Alps town of Combloux, and featuring Pierre Commarmond art of the hotel, golf clubs and a sports tennis racket with Mont Blanc in the background.
Artist: Pierre Commarmond
Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The top 5" of the poster was unevenly darkened. The poster was never folded. It had four 1 1/2" tears pretty evenly spaced in the top corners, with a 5" horizontal tear in the top left background area. It had pinholes around the edges, with a 1 1/2" tear near the center of the bottom border, and some tears at the bottom of the "UX" of the title, extending beneath it. There were a few small tears in the left and right borders. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was well backed with no excess, but the restorer did not address the darkening in the top of the poster, and also, after it was backed, it acquired some brown dot stains in the bottom of the poster, extending into the "AN" of "BLANC" (see our image).
