An Original Vintage Theatrical Handbill (measures 8" x 11" [20 x 28 cm]) (Learn More) Grand Magic Lantern Exhibition, the circa 1880s exhibition showing "the greatest show on Earth for the money", consisting of "an evening's entertainment that is worth a college course, may save a doctor's bill, and EQUAL TO A TRIP AROUND THE GLOBE". Magic lanterns were the precursor of motion pictures, and were similar to a modern day slideshow. Once movies were invented, the public would no longer go to see magic lantern shows, and they were only used in settings like schools. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Important Added Info: Note that in the earliest days of motion pictures (at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th), movies were all quite short (usually several minutes each), and they were shown at vaudeville theaters and other kinds of shows. The advertising for these kinds of places were often "daybills", which resemble U.S. inserts in size, but were printed on one-sheet paper, and also "handbills", which were similar to later heralds (similar daybills and handbills were used to advertise circuses at that time). These handbills would rarely have any artwork, but rather would list all of the varied entertainments available at the show. They were likely passed out to people in the street, and were completely disposable, and very few of them survive! Condition: very good. There are some tiny tears and tiny areas of paper loss in the borders and some creases where the handbill was tri-folded, but overall, it is in pretty nice condition, given it is well over 100 years old!
