An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Will Rogers was born in 1879, and people today can't imagine how popular he was and how much influence he had! He was part Cherokee Native American Indian, and he was a champion horse rider and lasso artist (film of this is on Youtube, and it is incredible what he could do!), and he started in Wild West shows and then vaudeville, but he soon started making movies, and he appeared in 33 very popular silent western movies, performing his own stunts. But when sound came in, unlike many other silent stars who could not adapt to talking pictures, Rogers became an even bigger star than ever, as audiences loved his homespun common sense humor. He starred in an astonishing 20 movies in 7 years, and he wrote daily newspaper articles that appeared all over the world, and he almost surely could have been elected President, had he wanted the office! In 1935, while on an airplane trip with famous aviator Wiley Post, the plane crashed, and both men were killed. Will was 55. Rogers' family made the unusual decision to withdraw all his films from circulation (out of respect!), which resulted in future generations not seeing his work, and this has caused him to be not very well known today, but he was a giant in his time! Important Added Info: Note that in 1930, Will Rogers appeared in person at the Metropolitan Theatre in Boston, and "a successful tie-up was effected with the Boston Elevated Railway". They printed posters that said "Will Rogers says: 'Use the El and meet me at the Met'", and they put the posters on all the elevated stations and streetcars! Also note that in recent auctions we have auctioned small photos of theater fronts from the 1930s and 1940s. Now we have been consigned a really cool collection of mostly 1930s 8x10 stills that show theater fronts and lobby displays (many of them have a stamp from a Boston company on the back, so it seems likely that most or all of them are from theaters in the Boston area)! All of those stills are in this set of auctions (in separate auctions). So this is a rare opportunity to purchase vintage 8x10 stills showing theater fronts from the 1930s (and since we have only auctioned a tiny number of these over all our years of auctioning, there is a good chance that it will be a long time before we have more of them). Also note that this still measures 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm]. Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades
