A Linenbacked English Special Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 40" [62 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Tom Eckersley was an English poster artist and teacher of design from the 1930s to the 1990s. He was one of the foremost graphic designers of the twentieth century working in the UK, and he created posters for London Transport, Gillette, Guinness, and many more. Eckersley was also a teacher and established the first graphic design course in the UK at what was then called the London College of Printing (now London College of Communication). Eckersley passed away in 1997 at the age of 82.
Artist: Tom Eckersley
Important Added Info: Note that we did research on this cool poster, and we found several examples of it, including in the London Transport Museum. It is called "Fish and Fishing" by that museum, but we saw another link that described it as "Watch or Catch". This was created as a "pair poster", which meant that it had two parts. The left part had this image, and the right part had information about fishing with the title "Watch or Catch" at the top, and small images at the top and bottom. We don't know if the poster was solely distributed in pairs, in which case this would be an incomplete poster. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, there is a right section to this poster that is not present. There are tears and tiny paper loss around the edges and a few creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
