An Autographed Original Artwork Drawing (measures 6" x 15" [15 x 38 cm]) (Learn More) Jack Davis was an American cartoonist and illustrator the 1950s to the 2010s. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1924, and after serving in World War II, he began trying to become a professional illustrator. In 1949, he moved to New York, but did not have much success until he went to EC Comics (E.C. Comics) and met publisher Bill Gaines, and that was the beginning of an incredibly successful relationship! He worked for EC (his horror comic stories and covers were especially memorable) until those comics folded, and afterwards, he had amazing success with magazine illustration and drawing movie posters. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 91, and he is surely one of the handful of greatest and most successful cartoonists to have ever lived! Artist: Jack Davis Important Added Info: Note that this artwork was personally drawn and signed by Jack Davis. We don't know exactly when it was created, or where the art appeared. We have seen prints of this that were sold framed. The first use of the art might have been in a magazine in the late 1950s or early 1960s, and of course, it might be one of a series of illustrations (this one is of a Native American Indian named Red Shirt), and we have seen similar drawings by Mr. Davis of Geronimo and Jesse James. If anyone knows more about this art, please e-mail us and we will post it here. All of the Jack Davis EC art was saved and has been sold at auction, but art like this is extremely difficult to find. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a Jack Davis original!
UPDATED 09/04/2017: Note that we have seen an ad that was displayed in the August 1961 issue of Wildest Westerns magazine (which started out as Favorite Westerns of Filmland, an offshoot of Favorite Monsters of Filmland) promoting Jack Davis posters of famous "Cowboys" and "Historical Indian Chiefs". So we know that Warren, the publisher of this magazine, commissioned Jack Davis to draw these pictures, which he then sold as full-color posters (there were six in all). We don't know if the original art for any of the other five is known to exist. Condition: good to very good. The art (which is on heavy illustration board) was once framed, and there are glue stains on the back of it. There are some dot stains and smudges around the edges of the art. There is white paint in the lower left of the image, extending into the leg that likely was a correction done by Mr. Davis (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
