An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 1/2" x 31 1/2" [60 x 80 cm]) (Learn More) Desarroi (released in English-speaking countries as "Distress"), the 1947 Robert-Paul Dugan French New York City romantic melodrama (based on the play 'Odette' by Victorien Sardou; a very clever idea, well executed; it is basically the old plot of a couple who were once lovers stranded on a desert island, and how they cope with it, but in this case, they are locked onto the roof of a Manhattan skyscraper, with the same result!; the ex-boyfriend is crazy, which complicates matters, and the poor woman must cope with no food or water, which they solve by drinking rain water and eating captured pigeons, but she also has to deal with his increasing craziness) starring Suzy Carrier, Jules Berry, Gabrielle Dorziar, Jean Debucourt, Tramel, and Valentine Tessier (billed as "Lentine Tessier"; as Odette) Artist: Boris Grinsson Important Added Info: Note that we feel certain that this poster is from the first French release in 1947. We have never auctioned another French poster from this movie! Note that this is an extremely rare French poster from right after World War II! Very few French posters survive from the mid 1940s or earlier. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds, and some tiny bits of paper loss and some tears scattered on the folds, with pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges and a few tiny dot stains scattered in the light colored areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did little restoration to the defects described above.
