An Original Vintage Linenbacked French Magazine Spread (measures 12 1/4" x 18" [31 x 46 cm]) (Learn More)

Le Rire was a successful French humor magazine published from October 1894 until its final issue in April 1971. Founded in Paris during the Belle Epoque by Felix Juven, Le Rire appeared as typical Parisians began to achieve more education, income and leisure time. The satirical journal was filled with excellent drawings by prominent artists, and it featured full-page chromotypographs on both covers and in the centerfold (many of these pieces are now highly desirable collectibles). Illustrations were contributed by artists such as Theophile Steinlen, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Georges Goursat, and many more.
Artist: Charly
Important Added Info: Note that because this linenbacked item is of a fairly small size, we will send it rolled if it is purchased with rolled linens (or by itself), but we will send it flat if it is purchased with flat items, because that would be less expensive shipping than sending two different packages.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Someone took a two-page spread from a French magazine and removed those pages and had them linenbacked. It appears that a small part of the center of one or both pages was missing, because the two pieces do not match up and are missing a small amount down the center. Overall, the pages were in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the pages "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
