Signals, the 1940 U.S. World War II (WWII) Navy recruitment poster ("Signals... for efficient employment of ships of the fleet, accurate and rapid means of communication is necessary. In visual communications one of the primary methods in use is the flag hoist. Signal flags, a different one for each letter and numeral, when hoisted to the yard arm represent orders for tactical maneuvers and ship handling from the flagship to the fleet or from one ship to another. Similarly the Navy signals the youth of America to investigate the benefits incident to an enlistment in the U.S. Navy. Earn while you learn!") encouraging men to enlist in the Navy, and featuring an image of warships flying signal flags.
