An Original Vintage Linenbacked Photogravure (measures 12 1/2" x 16 3/4") (Learn More)

Portrait of Oliver Wendell Holmes, the 1896 first impression photogravure of the painting by Sarah W. Whitman, created by Goupil, who was a major creator of these photogravures at this time. This poster features a black & white portrait of an aged Oliver Wendell Holmes. We obtained the following information from a seller who has sold many photogravures similar to this: "The artistry in the creation of these photogravures has produced the most clear, detailed, and broad tonal ranges that we have ever seen. The Intaglio process used for this collection is far superior to the more mechanical photogravures and rotogravures that we often see. We have inspected these under 10x magnification --the detail is exceptional and the stock, flawless. The plate impressions are deep and very visible to the naked eye but do not show up well on the digital image."
Artist: Sarah W. Whitman

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The photogravure had some smudges and faint stains around the edges. Overall, the photogravure was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the photogravure "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and any restorer could easily touch them up without re-backing it).
