An Original Vintage Linenbacked Swiss Circus Poster (measures 22 1/2" x 31 1/2" [57 x 80 cm]) (Learn More)

Grand Cirque National Suisse (literally translates to "National Grand Circus Switzerland"), the 1901 Swiss circus poster promoting the Lecusson family of acrobats & jugglers who specialized in stunts on horseback. This family had a long circus background! On one side, the family had been exhibiting animal menageries since the mid 1800s, and a daughter of that family married a famous acrobat, and in the 1890s, he convinced the younger members of the family to begin performing acrobatic feats while on horses and other animals! Note that this poster features a montage of three images of this family performing!
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had many creases, small tears, and small areas of paper loss scattered throughout, including in the faces of the performers. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Given the poster's substantial defects, the restorer did a really great job of making it presentable, and it will display well in the new owner's home, and there are only slight visual signs that it has had restoration. I think few people would realize it has had extensive restoration, unless they stared at the poster from an inch away.
