An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) The Cat and the Canary, the 1939 Elliott Nugent romantic horror mystery comedy ("The picture that will give your goose pimples goose pimples!"; "Chills, horrors and lots of fun!"; "Based on the Stage Play by John Willard") starring Bob Hope, Paulette Goddard, John Beal, Douglass Montgomery, Gale Sondergaard, Elizabeth Patterson, George Zucco, William Abbey (as "The Cat", a homicidal maniac!), and Nydia Westman. Note that this was a remake of the 1927 movie of the same name directed by Paul Leni, except that it has had comedy injected, to make a suitable movie for Bob Hope! Important Added Info: This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters. Note that this poster has never been folded! Some pre-1970 insert posters were folded twice horizontally at the poster exchange, while some were not. It can be difficult to find an unfolded example of many pre-1970 insert posters (note that most post-1970 inserts were NOT folded, so they are pretty much only found unfolded, and therefore this does not apply to those inserts). Condition: good. The poster was hand-folded in half at one time and there are sharp creases in that area that are repaired with tape from the back. There are some creases and scuffs scattered in various areas. There are some creases and tears of varying lengths (approximately 1" or less) along parts of some edges. A few of the tears or other defects as described above are repaired with tape from the back. Please see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item prior to placing a bid.
