An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

Ever in My Heart, the 1933 Archie Mayo World War I (WWI) Home Front romantic prejudice melodrama (about an upper class American woman from a small town who marries a distinguished German man who becomes a professor, and life is good for them, but then they have to deal with massive prejudice after World War I begins and the two countries are at war with each other; finally, things get so bad that the husband returns to Germany and joins the German army, and his wife divorces him, but later she is in Germany working for the war effort, and she meets him again) starring Barbara Stanwyck, Otto Kruger, Ralph Bellamy, Ruth Donnelly, Laura Hope Crews, and George Cooper. Note that this movie is very similar to "Gentleman's Agreement", made right after World War II, dealing with the prejudice faced by Jewish Americans after World War II. Except for history buffs, many people today are not aware that there was massive anti-German prejudice in the U.S. during World War I, and many horrible incidents of violence against German Americans whose only "crime" was having been born in Germany. This was another example of Warner Bros. in the early 1930s dealing with an important social issue (like "I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang" and "Wild Boys of the Road", among many others) at a time when other studios were pretty much unwilling to do so. However, it is interesting to note that this movie is essentially pro-German (and rightly so, because the Germans in the U.S. were treated abysmally during World War I). But just a few years after this, Warners would become aware of what was going on in Nazi Germany, and would be at the forefront of American studios rightfully making ANTI-German films! The reviews of this movie all agree that it is an excellent movie, but it is pretty much forgotten today except by major film buffs, and that is a shame (we imagine it is because of the subject matter). Finally, note that Otto Kruger made a wonderful German (and spoke German within the movie in parts), but he was actually a Dutch actor (even though his name sounds like it might be German!).

Important Added Info: Note that this is a title on which any sort of first release movie paper other than stills is beyond rare! We had never before auctioned ANY first release movie paper other than stills (not even a lobby card) until we were consigned this half-sheet! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that while this poster technically COULD be rolled in a tube, the backing is heavy enough that we strongly advise against it. Therefore, we will only send this poster in a very large flat package, unless the new owner insists on a tube, and accepts responsibility for any damage caused by it being rolled. The poster will arrive fine and display great if it is sent in a flat package, but it will cost more to send this way, especially if the poster is being sent outside the U.S., so please only bid on this poster when you take into mind the cost of shipping it in a very large flat package.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had some tiny areas of paper loss and stains in Stanwyck's neck and the blue collar of her dress beneath it. There was a tiny bit of paper loss in the background next to Kruger's lip and in the background above the "k" of "Stanwyck". There were some tiny bits of paper loss in the bottom of the "S" of "Stanwyck", and there was small paper loss below the "t", extending into the top of the second "E" of "EVER". There was paper loss in the bottom left corner that extended 6" up the left border and extended diagonally to the right border, cutting off the bottom of the flowers and extending to below the "E" of "EVER", and then across to below the "N" of "IN" in the bottom border (but only a small part of the flower background was affected by this fairly large paper loss). There was a long tear starting at the top of that paper loss, running horizontally through the middle of the flowers, and then running up through the flowers and through almost all of Stanwyck's hat, with small paper loss in the left of the hat. There were some other tears and paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking, because most of the paper loss and tears were around the edges. Although there were the ones affecting the image described above, there are very few within the stars' heads. The poster was really nicely backed by a top professional, and even though you can see signs of the restoration of the above defects, it will display really well on the new owner's wall. Given that this is the ONLY poster from this movie we have ever auctioned, we hope the bidders can be forgiving of its defects, but certainly, they should bear them in mind before bidding on this ultra rare and really cool poster!
