An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Campaign Book (measures 11 3/4" x 14 1/2" [30 x 37 cm]; 80 pages) (Learn More)

RKO's Victory Campaign (RKO was being very patriotic this year, and they included several propaganda movies designed to help the war effort), this 1942-1943 campaign book features illustrated ads promoting RKO's upcoming movies, and their biggest stars, including: Once Upon a Honeymoon (with Cary Grant & Ginger Rogers), The Pride of the Yankees (with Gary Cooper), Look Out Below (with Fred Astaire), The Gibson Girl (with Ginger Rogers), Journey Into Fear (produced and written by Orson Welles), Cheyenne (with Jean Arthur), Bundles for Freedom (with Cary Grant), Hitler's Children (with incredible artwork of Hitler Youth saluting Hitler, who is saluting them back!; "based on Gregor Zeimer's 'Education For Death'"), Tarzan Triumphs AND Tarzan and the Sheik, and more! Note that there is an incredible ad for Walt Disney's Bambi, plus this was the year of Val Lewton, because there are illustrated ads for Cat People (called "The Cat People"), 7th Victim, I Walked with a Zombie, and The Leopard Man! There is also a seven-page section on RKO shorts, including a full-page ad for their 18 Walt Disney cartoons! This is one of the nicest of the studio yearbooks produced in the 1940s, both because of the content, and because of the color artwork (RKO had made some of the best full-color campaign books in the early 1930s, but by the late 1930s their campaign books were mostly black/white or sepia, but with this year, they returned to their earlier glory). We have included images of the front cover of the book and many of the two-page spreads (but we wish we could have photographed the entire book, because there are so many great images!). The entire book is professionally bound with a spiral binding, which allows you to lay the book open flat without damaging the pages (something most other yearbooks do not have). Also note that, as was often the case with these campaign books, some of the movies advertised were either never made, had their titles changed before they were released, or were made with different casts than those announced in the campaign book. Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters. Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars!

Important Added Info: Note that this is a special "deluxe" version of this campaign book! It has a hard outer cover binding over the regular cover that has snaps on the right that allow you to snap it shut. Perhaps this was only made for major theaters or for executives, because we have never seen this campaign book with this added deluxe cover before! Note: We have 16 images of the campaign books in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 16 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 6.

Condition: good to very good. There is much staining in the lower left of the added deluxe cover, and much staining on the back of it, as well as some staining around the edges of the added cover. The regular campaign book inside is in pretty nice condition, except that two of the final pages have come loose from the spiral binding, but we know the book is complete, because it has the same number of pages that previous examples of this book have had (see our images to get a good sense of the condition of this book).
