An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 40 3/4" x 80" [104 x 203 cm]) (Learn More)

Howard Hawks' The Thing From Another World!, the classic 1951 Christian Nyby science fiction (sci-fi) monster horror thriller ("The Thing from another world!"; "How did it get here?"; "Natural or Supernatural?"; "Howard Hawks' Astounding Movie"; "Look out... it's The Thing from another world!"; produced by Howard Hawks; based on the story by John W. Campbell, best known for being the editor of Astounding Science Fiction!) starring Kenneth Tobey, Margaret Sheridan, Robert Cornthwaite, Dewey Martin, Paul Frees, John Dierkes, Eduard Franz, James Arness (in the title role as The Thing From Another World!), William Self, and Billy Curtis (as the miniature "Thing" in the final sequence when the monster appears to shrink). Note that this movie had a very unusual poster campaign, where the letters of the title were made to look like body parts ("blood and guts"!), with wires coming off of the letters. Almost all the posters had this basic design. The pressbook calls all of them "teaser" posters and says "This display material was designed for an advance teaser campaign, as well as for general use". So obviously, they intentionally wanted to have the posters not reveal much about the movie, as a way to get people interested and get them into the theater.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this poster was created oddly, with a small piece at the top (that contains the top tagline), and a slightly larger piece at the bottom (everything below the title). Apparently, they wanted the title printed on a single sheet! This odd printing method has often resulted in the top small piece getting lost, and it is very hard to find a complete example of this poster! We have previously auctioned 3 incomplete examples of this poster, but this is the very first time we have been consigned a complete example!

Condition: fair to good. There are many pinholes and some tears around the edges of all three sections. There are creases, small tears, and some tiny paper loss on parts of several foldlines. There are some pieces of clear tape on the back of some of the tears. The top small section has a diagonal tear starting in the top border and running down into the top of the second "D" of "DID", and someone put tape on the back of that tear, and used a colored pen on the front of the tear where there was fine surface paper loss. The top and bottom small pieces were attached to the center large piece with pieces of tape, and there are a few pieces of tape in those areas on the two small pieces, and some surface paper loss. Someone colored the surface paper loss green to try and make it match better. There is also a 1" x 3" area of paper loss in the green background above the "H" of "THING" in the title, and someone taped a piece of green paper to the back of that area. There are many smudges and stains in the two smaller pieces, and a lesser amount in the larger piece. Obviously, this poster has lots of defects, but fortunately, they are primarily in the borders and in the green background areas, and they are the sort that respond well to expert restoration. After linenbacking by a talented professional, this poster would look great, and will not require a lot of paint restoration. But bear in mind the posters defects and the cost of restoration before placing a bid on this rare poster.
