An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 55" x 78" [140 x 198 cm]) (Learn More)

La Dolce Vita (sometimes referred to as "Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita"; literally translates to "The Sweet Life"), the classic 1960 (released in the U.S. in 1961) Federico Fellini (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) French/Italian romantic melodrama ("Uncut uncensored now for all to see... the nights, the drunken revels, the sin and the sinners, the perverted decadence of the jet set rich who live what they call 'the sweet life'"; "The most talked about - the most shocked about film of our years"; about a successful Italian movie critic who is dissatisfied with the emptiness of his life, even though he is surrounded by rich and famous people and has a beautiful girlfriend, and he yearns to understand why) starring Marcello Mastroianni, Anita Ekberg, Anouk Aimee, Yvonne Furneaux, Magali Noel, Lex Barker, Jacques Sernas, Alain Cuny, Annibale Ninchi, Walter Santesso, Nadia Gray, and Franca Pasut. Note that Astor Pictures, which had been known for mostly re-releasing classic U.S. movies in the 1940s and 1950s, acquired the rights for the first American release of this classic Italian movie, which they released on April 19, 1961.

Artist: Giorgio Olivetti
Important Added Info: Note that this "country of origin" poster for this partially Italian movie is one of the incredibly rare cases where a wonderful movie has a wonderful poster! This exact poster (the Italian two-panel) has a far superior image to that of the Italian one-panel or any of the other posters for this movie we have seen from Italy or any other country. We first auctioned an example of this poster at our second major auction in 1991, when it auctioned for $7,700, which seemed like a high price back at that time when few posters auctioned for that much. But over the years, we have seen other examples auction for ever increasing amounts (including one last year that reportedly auctioned for over $40,000), and many of the examples we have seen have had condition or fading issues, while the example we are currently auctioning is a really nice one (see below). Finally, note that this movie opened in 1960. Apparently, when the poster was first printed, some examples were printed that had a 1959 copyright date, but they are otherwise identical to the posters with the 1960 copyright date. There are a few of those posters with the "1959" on them in existence, but the movie never played in 1959, and there is no other difference in the poster. This poster has the 1960 copyright date, which is the year the movie premiered.

Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small paper loss at some crossfolds and some creases, tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of some foldlines. The colors of the poster are bright and vivid, and not at all faded (we have seen other examples with various degrees of fading. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
