Date Sold 9/13/2015Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Movie Script (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm], 100 pages) (Learn More) Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the classic 1977 Steven Spielberg (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) science fiction (sci-fi) alien UFO melodrama ("Close Encounter of the First Kind: Sighting of a UFO"; "Close Encounter of the Second Kind: Physical Evidence"; "Close Encounter of the Third Kind: Contact"; "We are not alone."; "Every 15 minutes, someone sees a UFO"; "Written and Directed by Steven Spielberg") starring Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Francois Truffaut (the famous French director, in an acting role; "as Lacombe"), Bob Balaban, and Cary Guffey (as the little boy). Note that Paul Schrader wrote the original screenplay for this movie, but Steven Spielberg made many changes to Schrader's script. Finally, Schrader asked that his name be taken off the screenplay, and since it had to have someone's name on it, Spielberg put his own name on the screenplay! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this script is the revised draft and the screenplay was written by Paul Schrader and Steven Spielberg (see above). Also note that there are a multitude of different colored revision pages from many different dates from between 4/22/76 and 5/10/76. Note that this script was consigned to us directly from director/screenwriter Charles Shyer. He was close friends with both producer Julia Phillips and original screenwriter Paul Schrader, and they would often send him current versions of their scripts for him to read and give his comments on (and Mr. Shyer would send them his scripts as well, for the same reason). Note that, as noted above in our description of the movie, Paul Schrader wrote the original version of this script, and as noted above, not that much of his original script remains unaltered (the script has "SS changes included" on the title page, which means that the revisions were Steven Spielberg's, but what was left of the original script was Paul Schrader's. Note that this script ends with the original ending where you hear the original 1940s recording of Jiminy Cricket singing "When You Wish Upon a Star". The song was played in the first previews of the movie, and the audiences did not respond well to it, so it does not appear in the final version of this movie in this way, although the melody was incorporated into John Williams' score, but the original ending with the lyrics of the song is in the script offered here! Mr. Shyer is the director of many extremely popular movies from the 1970s to the present, many of which are romantic comedies, including House Calls, Private Benjamin, Baby Boom, remakes of Father of the Bride and The Parent Trap, and many others. Over the years, he collected scripts, which he received primarily in two different ways. He was friends with screenwriters, directors, and producers during those years, and they would sometimes send him scripts of their movies to get his opinion of them, and many of those are offered here. In addition, as a member of the screenwriter's branch of the Academy, he was sent many scripts where the producers hoped that their script would be nominated for a Best Screenwriting Academy Award, and many of these have "for your consideration" printed on the cover. This is a rare opportunity to purchase original scripts that come directly from the personal collection of a prominent director/screenwriter! Condition: very good to fine. Note that we have photographed the cover of the script, the title page, the final page of the script (the one that reads "THE END"), and one or more interior pages. These images will not only provide important information about the script, but they also allow you to closely judge the condition of the script. The script is 100% complete!
