Auction History Result #203 MARK OF ZORRO linen one-sheet movie poster '40 Tyrone Power, Darnell! Date Sold: 12/18/2004Appears in: Vintage Hollywood Posters 8 Sold For: $12,250.00 An Original Vintage Theater-Used Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) The Mark of Zorro, the 1940 Rouben Mamoulian south-of-the-border masked hero romantic action adventure thriller ("The jagged mark of his sword struck terror to every heart - but one!"; "Who was the bold masked adventurer whose mocking laughter left terror in every heart - but one?"; "Based on the story by Johnston McCulley") starring Tyrone Power ("in the most famous of all screen roles"; in the title role as Zorro/Don Diego Vega), Linda Darnell (one of the most amazing and tragic stories in Hollywood history, Darnell was born in Texas and had a mother who pushed her into modeling at age 11, telling people she was 16; two years later, she began acting, and she had a Hollywood screen test at age 14, but when her real age was discovered, she was sent home; after two more years of acting, she was given a major role in "Hotel for Women", and at age 15, became the youngest leading lady ever in Hollywood; that same year, she co-starred with Tyrone Power in "Day-Time Wife", still only 15!; over the next few years, she became a major Hollywood star; in 1947, she appeared in "Forever Amber", which included a scene of her surviving being trapped by a fire; she had an unhappy personal life, marrying three times and having major problems with alcohol; in 1965, at age 41, she was at her secretary's home watching one of her earliest hits, "Stardust", and the house caught on fire and she died, having made 46 movies), Basil Rathbone, Gale Sondergaard, Eugene Pallette, Montagu Love, J. Edward Bromberg, Robert Lowery, Chris-Pin Martin (born "Ysabel Ponciana Chris-Pin Martin Piaz", he was of Hispanic descent, and he made around 80 film appearances, almost always appearing as a Mexican speaking fractured English!), and Janet Beecher Condition: . This poster was linenbacked, and it had very minor defects, and was well backed. Read below for a description of those defects, and about the quality of the restoration (if I found anything worth commenting on!). You should also look at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). the poster had a tiny hole at the top crossfold and minor wear along the foldlines; there were some areas of paper loss across the top edge of the top blank border; a circular area of paper loss in the right end of the top border just touching the top edge of the image and two small areas of paper loss in the right blank border. Overall, this poster had next-to-no defects of any kind in the image area, and its basically minor border defects (which consisted of missing blank white paper, most on the edges far from the image) were extremely well corrected. The poster was beautifully linenbacked, and I can't imagine a collector who would not love to have this wonderful poster hanging on their wall!
