An Original Vintage Unfolded Stage Play Poster (measures 21 1/2" x 29 1/4" [55 x 74 cm]) (Learn More)

Blue Jeans, the 1890s stage play production ("Blue Jeans will never wear out"; "Written by Joseph Arthur author of 'The Still Alarm'") starring Robert C. Hilliard, George D. Chaplin, J.J. Wallace, Jacques Kruger, W.J. Wheeler, Alice Leigh, and Marian Mourdant Strickland. The play made its debut in 1890 in New York, and enjoyed considerable success around the United States and in revivals in the following decades. Because of this, we cannot be certain that the poster offered here is from the 1890 production, and it may be from a later production of the play (the Library of Congress dates some of the posters as 1899). Note that one of the posters for this play has one of the most classic melodrama images there is, which is of man on a table about to be cut in half by a sawmill blade! The caption under it reads "The Great Saw Mill Scene", and this may have been the first time it was used, or it could have been done prior to it. Even though this scene seems to be a classic movie scene, we have never seen a single movie poster that illustrates it! Also, a knowledgeable collector tells us that posters for this play can be seen in the background of Stanley Kubrick's 1955 film Killer's Kiss!
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.

Condition: good. There are several areas of paper loss around the upper and right edges of the poster. There are some creases and tears of varying lengths around the edges of the poster. There is a 4" tear in the center right edge that extends into the art of the woman at right, but overall the artwork is in generally nice condition.
