An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style B Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

The Man From Planet X, the 1951 Edgar Ulmer UFO space alien science fiction (sci-fi) horror melodrama ("The Weirdest Visitor the Earth has ever seen!"; "The deadliest enemy the world has ever known!"; "Written and produced by Aubrey Wisberg and Jack Pollexfen"; about a scientist who discovers a planet is approaching the Earth, and then a spaceship lands in a remote part of Scotland, and the daughter of the scientist tries to make contact with the alien onboard!) starring Robert Clarke, Margaret Field, Raymond Bond, William Schallert, Roy Engel, and Pat Goldin (billed as "and the Strange Man from Planet X"). Note that reading the plot summary above would make you think that this movie was a rip-off of The Day the Earth Stood Still, but actually, it came out BEFORE that, and also before most of the 1950s sci-fi greats. It was shot in six days on a budget of $43,000, a tiny fraction of the budgets for "The Thing From Another World" ($1.6 million) and "The Day The Earth Stood Still" ($1.2 million), and while it lacks in special effects, it still was a groundbreaking movie!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that almost all posters from this early Edgar Ulmer sci-fi movie are extremely rare, but the half-sheets are incredibly rare. We have only twice before auctioned the other style of half-sheet, and we have only once before auctioned this style of half-sheet, BUT THAT WAS THE EXACT SAME POSTER (it has now been re-consigned to us), so we still have only auctioned one example of this style! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would almost certainly damage it, so we will only send it in a large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage).

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had tears and small paper loss around the edges of the poster. There was a tear near the center of the bottom border that extended up into the second "e" of "Enemy" and one in the right of the top border that extended into the blue background. There was small paper loss and a stain in the upper leg of the alien. There was a faint vertical scuff line running down the left 5" of the poster. There were some creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed, partially "in the European style" (meaning the restorer left alone some of the above defects to avoid putting a lot of paint on the poster). I agree with this, because the poster displays nicely from any reasonable viewing distance, and it is a big plus that it was never folded.
