An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

Manhattan Melodrama, the classic 1934 W.S. Van Dyke New York romantic love triangle gangster crime melodrama ("Why was Broadway's most notorious gambler chosen as best man at the wedding of the District Attorney?"; "Was it true that she had been the gambler's sweetheart, too?"; about a very unusual romantic triangle between a gangster, his girlfriend, and the District Attorney; the gangster and the D.A. are lifelong pals; they both love the same girl; the D.A. convicts the gangster of murder, is elected Governor, then must decide whether to allow his best friend to be executed, especially since his wife loves the best friend more than he; they don't make 'em like that anymore!) starring Clark Gable, William Powell, Myrna Loy, Leo Carrillo, Nat Pendleton, Mickey Rooney, Isabel Jewell, and Muriel Evans. Note that this movie has an unusual distinction. John Dillinger was captured by the FBI, only because his girlfriend's roommate turned him in; she told the FBI she would get him to take her to a movie, and that she would be dressed in red; the movie they were seeing was "Manhattan Melodrama"!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this insert, and that was 28 years ago, when it sold for $2,420!

Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we know it would definitely lessen its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage).

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the blank borders were trimmed off and around 1/4" of the top edge of the background area. There was small paper loss at the left end of the top fold, with some tiny paper loss in the right 2" of the top fold. There were some stains and a tear in the upper left of the yellow oval area, slightly extending into the letters. The poster had been displayed and the colors had faded. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to paperbacking. A really top restorer replaced the missing border areas and performed expert restoration to the above defects, and also brightened the colors to make them match how the poster originally looked. This require considerable restoration, but because it was expertly done, the poster displays really well, and almost no one could realize the restoration it had had, even when looking right at it. But please bear in mind the restoration this poster has had (and look at our super-sized image to see how well it displays) before placing a bid on it.
