An Original Vintage Linenbacked German Board Game Cover (measures 10 1/4" x 14 3/4" [26 x 37 cm]) (Learn More)

Dein KdF-Wagen, the 1940 German board game cover featuring art of a Volkswagen Beetle driving through the country. The game, which was very similar to the Milton Bradley "Game of Life", involved rolling dice to move your car around a track and following instruction on the spaces. While you play, you also get to learn facts about cities in the Third Reich (apparently, Hitler personally endorsed the game as a way to teach German children and citizens important facts about their country). We found two German sites saying this game was from 1940. Note that while Volkswagen cars were first made in 1938, production of them was soon suspended, due to the need for metal for war reasons, and production was not resumed until after the end of the war in 1945. The card on this game cover is the very first version of the Volkswagen, named by Adolf Hitler himself, the "Kraft-durch-Freude-Wagen", which means "Strength Through Joy Car", which was abbreviated to "KdF-Wagen", which is how it is named on this game cover! If anyone knows more about this game, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Only the game cover is present, or perhaps it is a poster based on the game cover. It has a few creases and scuffs scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
