An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded English Movie Poster (measures 90" x 116" [229 x 295 cm]) (Learn More)

When the Earth Trembled, the 1913 Barry O'Neill silent San Francisco California earthquake disaster romantic family melodrama (the 1906 earthquake is just part of the movie's plot, which involves business partners who have a son and daughter who get married, and after a falling out between the partners, one of the does all he can to wreck their children's lives) starring Harry Myers, Ethel Clayton, Richard Morris, Mrs. George W. Walters, and Peter Lang. Note that this was a three-reel movie which had included major recreation of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake (and subsequent fire). The makers of the movie included actual footage taken in 1906 in the movie (and after all, this was only seven years after those events!). During the filming of the earthquake sequence, a chandelier fell and almost killed Ethel Clayton! It opened in San Francisco in November 1913 on Market Street, and it was a critical and commercial success. The EYE Filmmuseum was able to locate incomplete prints of this movie in their own archives, at the BFI, and at the Museum of Modern Art, and they were able to reconstruct most of the movie, which depicts one of the most major real life disasters in American history, filmed just seven years after the events.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that one would certainly hope that this wonderful poster will be fully restored and displayed, and certainly, there could be no better place to display it than in San Francisco, which still vividly remembers this earthquake of over a century ago, and anxiously considers the possibility of a repeat performance! Also, note that we have never auctioned any movie paper from this movie before. It was made in the U.S. by Lubin in 1913, and the European distribution was handled from a English office, which printed this 90" x 116" poster. No doubt it was printed with the title in several different languages, for use in different European countries, and this particular poster was printed with the title in French, for use in France (but all of the rest of the printing on the poster is in English). This English poster was printed in 6 sections designed to overlap. The poster was glued or taped together at one time, and it is partially folded, and it now is around 32" x 48". As noted below, it is incredibly fragile, so the smartest way to ship it is in a very large flat package. We could put it between sheets of brown paper and then roll it somewhat and send it in a very wide tube, but that would likely caused some additional small paper loss, so we would prefer to send it in a very large flat package. So bear that expense in mind before bidding.

Condition: fair. The poster is incredibly fragile. It has paper loss on several folds and in parts of the borders (see our image). But the vast majority of the poster is there, and any talented restorer could certainly "rescue" it during linenbacking, but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on this.
