Date Sold 7/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 8 3/4" x 12" [22 x 30 cm]; 287 pages) (Learn More) Motion Picture Studio Directory, the 1919 reference book published by Motion Picture News, an exhibitor magazine. It is similar to the casting directories published starting around the same time, but it has fewer pages, and like those, it gives biographies of then-current stars and also information about directors, cinematographers, screenwriters, producers, and film studios, information we have not seen in similar books, and like the casting directories, it has a lot of full-page and partial page display ads that were paid for by current actors looking to get more exposure.. There are around 50 full-page images of stars and directors at the front of the book, including Fatty Arbuckle and Theda Bara. We have also seen two very similar books called "Motion Picture Studio Directory and Trade Annual " from 1921 and 1923, and those are hardcovers that measure 6" x 9 1/4" and had hundreds of pages, so we imagine that between 1918 and 1921, the book merged with something called "Trade Annual", and downsized in size and increased in page count, and we don't know if it was published in other years. We believe it to be quite rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that the first interior page has "Property of Joseph Calder" written on it. Calder was an art director in 1921 and 1922, including on Valentino's Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but we don't know what he was doing in 1919. Also note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Condition: fair to good. There is much staining on the covers and some staining on the inside covers and the first interior page. The rest of the pages are all rippled down the center in a band approximately 4" wide. It is not extremely distracting, but it is a clear defect (see our many images). Note that we recently auctioned this very book, which was the first time we had ever auctioned it, and the high bidder felt we had not done an adequate job of describing the book's defects, so he returned it. We have lowered the condition grade and better described the defects and are now re-auctioning this very same book. Learn More about condition grades
