Lawrence of Arabia, the classic 1962 (wide release in the U.S. in 1963) David Lean (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) English/U.S. World War I (WWI) desert adventure thriller ("Stands Alone!"; "Unanimously acclaimed as 'One of the all time greatest films!'"; "Best Picture of the Year!"; "Winner of 7 Academy Awards!"; "The motion picture that made great international stars of Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif"; "After five years... The first motion picture from the creators of 'The Bridge On The River Kwai.'"; "A mighty spectacle of action and adventure!"; produced by Sam Spiegel and David Lean; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Jose Ferrer, Anthony Quayle, Claude Rains, Arthur Kennedy, Omar Sharif (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; "as 'Ali'"), Peter O'Toole (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as T.E. Lawrence; billed as "introducing Peter O'Toole as Lawrence"; which is odd, because he had small parts in several movies prior to this one!), and Zia Mohyeddin

Artist: Georges Kerfyser
Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by the music composer, Maurice Jarre! Our consignor bought this poster from a man who had it for many years. That man went to a special film music event in Los Angeles in 1996, where he knew Maurice Jarre, who did the iconic music for this movie, would be in attendance. He showed the poster to Jarre, who kindly not only autographed it in the lower left, but also wrote some of the bars of the music above it! Our consignor does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we are 100% certain the signature is authentic.

Note that there are unusual movie posters, but this is surely one of the most unusual ones we have auctioned. Even though we have never auctioned it before, we know a fair amount about it, because we previously auctioned a very similar poster from "Grand Prix" and another from "2001: A Space Odyssey". But exactly what is it? It is a movie poster that measures 30" x 40", but it is not printed on paper! Rather, it is printed on a plastic material that is likely acetate. It has full-color printing on both sides. We would have to think that this was intended to be displayed in light boxes, but it likely was only used in major theaters showing major productions (which all three of these titles mentioned certainly are), but not used for any non-major movies (which would also help account for why they are so rare). Given that we have only auctioned these few posters like this, we think it is likely that making these posters stopped because theaters didn't want to pay to have expensive light boxes installed (and it would be many years before double-sided posters used in light boxes became commonplace). The acetate 2001: A Space Odyssey poster like this which we auctioned sold for $3,961!

Condition: very good. There is a 2" tear in the lower left in the blank area, with a crease below it, and someone put a piece of clear tape on the back of that area. There are some tiny dot stains around the edges and a tiny stain in the upper left background area near the middle of the right border. This incredibly rare and unusual acetate poster can certainly be displayed exactly as it is, or one might choose to have some slight restoration performed. Either way, the new owner will have a likely one of a kind poster from one of the most classic movies of all time to display on their wall!
