Auction History Result 3r001 HAIL HAL ROACH one-sheet '34 sensational Al Hirschfeld art of Laurel & Hardy, Our Gang & more! Date Sold: 1/27/2009Sold For: $6,300.00 An Original Vintage Theater-Used Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Hail Hal Roach, a special one-sheet ("We celebrate his 20th anniversary as king of screen comedy by presenting his latest, funniest, comedy classic"; "Hal Roach All Stars, Hal Roach Musical Comedies, Our Gang, Thelma Todd (she was a Miss America contestant who started making movies in the mid-1920s, and when sound movies started and it was discovered that she had a pleasant voice, she started appearing in dozens of movies, mostly romantic comedies; she appeared in two Marx Bros. movies, and opened a Hollywood restaurant, and in 1935, after having appeared in over 100 movies, she was found dead in her garage; it was ruled a suicide, but many think it was murder by gangsters trying to take over her club), Patsy Kelly, Charley Chase, Laurel and Hardy") created in 1934 to celebrate Hal Roach's twenty years in the motion picture industry! Theaters would display this poster along with the Hal Roach movie they were showing in 1934. Note that this poster includes artwork by Al Hirschfeld of all of Roach's most famous stars including Laurel & Hardy and Our Gang. Note that Thelma Todd and Patsy Kelly made 22 comedy shorts together between 1933 and 1935 (they stopped making them when Thelma Todd died, and the last of them was released in 1936 after her death). They were made by Hal Roach for MGM, and they were a rare female comedy team! Artist: Al Hirschfeld Condition: very good. There is 4" of clean separation at the center of the top foldline and 1" of separation at the center of the other two horizontal foldlines. There are some tiny tears in the borders. Other than the above truly minor defects, the poster is in quite nice condition, and it has never had any sort of restoration or tape on either the front or back! This item has survived in pretty nice condition, but has some relatively minor imperfections. If they are within the image, they are not very distracting at all, or they may be in the blank borders, where they will not show when the item is displayed. We may have written a few words about those imperfections, but we may not have, as they are relatively minor, and you can likely see them by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual item (if they are the type that CAN'T be seen in our super-sized image, like faint water staining or tape on the back, we ALWAYS describe that in words).
