Date Sold 12/20/2007Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Campaign Book (measures 11 1/4" x 14 1/4"; 36 pages) (Learn More) The Story of United Artists Product 1937-38, the 1937 United Artists campaign book ("The Book of the Year") featuring upcoming United Artists movies and stars from movies that were planned for production by United Artists in the coming year. The campaign book includes mostly black & white images of ads for the major upcoming United Artists films including The Goldwyn Follies, Dead End (Humphrey Bogart), The Hurricane, Stella Dallas (Stanwyck), Honeymoon in Reno, The Cowboy and the Lady (Gary Cooper & Merle Oberon), Four Feathers (Robert Donat), Knight Without Armor (Dietrich), The Tempest Within (Oberon), Gaiety Girls, Skippy, and much more! Note that there is a full page ad for "Six From Alexander Korda", with a large image of that producer, and a full page ad for "Five From David O. Selznick", with a large image of that producer. Also note that, as was often the case with these campaign books, some of the movies advertised were either never made, had their titles changed before they were released, or were made with different casts than those announced in the campaign book! Note that, in the case of this particular campaign book, the movie "The Arabian Nights" (not pictured here, but given a full page in the campaign book) was announced as a movie starring Charles Boyer, Madeleine Carroll, Sylvia Sidney, Henry Fonda, and Pat Patterson, but the movie was never made at this time, and it was finally made in 1942 with Sabu, Jon Hall, and Maria Montez, and it was made by Universal, and NOT United Artists! Also note that "The Four Feathers" was advertised as starring Robert Donat, but it was not made in 1937, and by the time it was made in 1939, Donat had dropped out of the project, and it was made with John Clements and Ralph Richardson leading the cast! Finally, note that the campaign book has a full page ad (not pictured on this auction) for a Sylvia Sidney movie called "Kiss In Paris", but that movie was never made (and Sidney's career took a nosedive at this time, and she made few films over the next 9 years!). Finally, note that there is a full page ad with a large picture of Paulette Goddard and a small picture of her and Charlie Chaplin, which announces that "Charles Chaplin will present Paulette Goddard in A Dramatic Love Story To be Personally Produced and Directed by Mr. Chaplin". Obviously, this movie was intended to be made after the success of "Modern Times", but in fact, Chaplin did not make a movie in 1937, and his next film was "The Great Dictator" in 1940. One wonders what this project with Paulette Goddard was intended to be! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: very good to fine. This is a hardcover book, and there are scuffs and smudges on the front and back covers, and on the inside covers and the facing pages, all of which are blank. The interior pages are generally in excellent condition! WE HAVE LOOKED THROUGH THIS BOOK VERY CAREFULLY, AND WE FEEL CERTAIN IT IS 100% COMPLETE, WITH NO MISSING PAGES OR CUT OUT PORTIONS!
