An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

Bulldog Drummond in Africa, the 1938 Louis King Morocco detective jungle adventure crime mystery thriller ("Adventure in a weird mysterious jungle!"; "Based on 'Challenge' by H.C. [Sapper] McNeile"; about the legendary detective in Morocco about to be married, but a member of Scotland Yard is kidnapped, and he must rescue him!) starring John Howard (in the title role as Bulldog Drummond), Heather Angel, H.B. Warner, J. Carrol Naish, Reginald Denny, E.E. Clive, and Anthony Quinn (in a very early role as a henchman). Note that "Bulldog Drummond" was a fictional English detective who was created in 1920 in a magazine story by H.C. McNeile, who wrote under the pen name of "Sapper" He appeared in ten novels, short stories, and even stage plays. When McNeile passed away in 1937, his friend, Gerard Fairlie, wrote more stories between 1938 and 1954, and after that, other authors created even more stories. Drummond was a World War I veteran who is bored and becomes an amateur detective, and he marries his first client, who becomes his assistant. The first movie based on this character was in 1923, with Carlyle Blackwell in the lead role. There was one more silent with Jack Buchanan in the lead, and then Ronald Colman starred in the first sound version in 1929. There were 13 movies in the 1930s, one with Ray Milland and many with John Howard in the lead role. The character was revived in 1947, and 5 movies were made between 1947 and 1951, with Ron Randell, Tom Conway, and Walter Pidgeon playing the leads.

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this "other company" poster (and we have also never before auctioned the studio-issued three-sheet, or any other large paper). For that matter, we have also never auctioned a studio-issued one-sheet, so first release posters from this movie clearly are extremely rare! This was printed by Associated Displays Corporation which was a company based in New York City. Before it was discovered by noted poster dealer/historian Walter Reuben, collectors did not know the name of this company (and thought it to be located in the Midwest), and it is often referred to as the "other company" (and we will continue to refer to it that way, since collectors know it that way). From 1936 to roughly 1941, this company printed its own one-sheets and lobby card sets (and a very few inserts, half-sheets, three-sheets, 40x60s and stills) for three major studio movies (Warner Brothers, Paramount and United Artists, but no other studios). The items almost always feature a tiny legal disclaimer and cast credits only. The posters and lobby cards are from the original release of the movie, and almost always have completely different artwork from the regular studio release. They did this by combining elements from different film scenes onto one poster or card. Sometimes, "other company" posters have images that are the equal of those from the regular studio release posters.

Note that this poster needs to be shipped in a tube that measures between 42" and 44" long. Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at some crossfolds and some creases, tears, and tiny paper loss on parts of some folds. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but onto a somewhat thinner linen, which was slightly roughly handled, and there are now creases in the bottom center (in the bottom 6"), both in the poster and in the linen, but they are not very distracting.
