An Original Vintage Folded Circus Poster (measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More)

Imre Kiralfy's Columbus and the Discovery of America, the 1892 circus poster ("The Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth"; "Thrilling and momentous scene at court. Queen Isabella with divine inspiration declaring 'I undertake the enterprise for my own Crown of Castile and will pledge my jewels to raise the necessary funds.'"; "The world's grandest, largest, best, amusement institution") advertising the traveling historical adventure stage play production (written by Imre Kiralfy), which was performed within the famous Barnum & Bailey Circus ("The World's Grandest, Largest, Best, Amusement Institution"). Nowadays, we think of circuses as being all wild animals and acrobats, but in 1892, elaborate stage plays were performed as well! The only stage play poster we have seen (a horizontal 30x40 poster) has a great stone litho image of the historic moment when Queen Isabella pledged her jewels to fund Christopher Columbus' voyage. If anyone knows more about this stage play, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: fair. The poster was folded down the middle and it had tears and small paper loss scattered down that fold. It had stains and paper loss in the bottom right corner, and stains to the left of that area in the tagline area and the credit below it (see our image). It had a 5" tear in the left of the tagline area and an 8" tear in the bottom center of the image area, but no paper loss. It had tiny tears and paper loss around the edges, with an 8" tear near the middle of the left border, and a vertical tear running down the middle half of the right border, slightly entering the image background, but not causing paper loss. Someone put paper tape on the back of the borders, the middle of the poster, and the tear in the middle left to reinforce them. This would not be the easiest restoration, because of the paper loss in the bottom right corner, but the letters can be easily guessed at, and the image loss is in the background. Certainly, this incredible historic poster deserves to be rescued by a talented restorer!
