An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) At the Circus, the 1939 Edward Buzzell musical screwball comedy ("Keep the world laughing!") starring The Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, and Harpo Marx), Kenny Baker, Florence Rice, Eve Arden, Margaret Dumont, Nat Pendleton, and Charles Gemora (as Gibraltar the gorilla). Note that this was the movie where the Marx Brothers sing the song "Lydia the Tattooed Lady"! Also note that MGM initially was going to call this movie "A Day at the Circus" (to capitalize on the success of "A Day at the Races"), but that title was dropped (although it is on a few stills). There was a working title of "Marx Bros At the Circus" that is also on some stills, but not the 1939 posters or lobby cards. To make things confusing, when MGM re-released the movie in 1962, the advertising made it look like the title of the movie was "Marx Bros At the Circus". We have only auctioned it twice before (the first time was 12 years ago), and then we auctioned a different example of the card, and that card has now been re-consigned to us! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: good. The card has pinholes in the corners and paper loss in the left blank corners, caused by rough removal of the pins, but only blank white paper was affected. It has some faint black stains scattered in the top center of the card, with a few in Groucho's forehead and in the letters at top center. It has surface paper loss in the center of the "R" of "MARX". It has faint smudges in the solid background areas, and vertical scuff marks in the bottom right background areas. The card was displayed in a frame, and for unknown reasons, the right and bottom borders were covered by a mat, but the other two borders were not, and the card darkened throughout, except in the two borders that were covered (see our image). In spite of these defects, the card can absolutely be displayed and enjoyed exactly as it is. However, its defects are the sort that respond well to expert restoration (it is likely that some or all of the darkening, slight smudges, and stains can be removed chemically, and not require much paint restoration at all). Either way, the new owner will have a wonderful card to display on their wall. Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
