An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 11 1/4" x 14 1/2" [29 x 37 cm]; 52 pages) (Learn More)

Columbia Pictures Season 1928-1929, the 1928 Columbia Pictures campaign book ("The perfect 36") sent to theater owners to encourage them to show upcoming Columbia movies scheduled for 1928 and 1929. The book includes many pages of images and information about Columbia's stars and upcoming movies including: The Fall of Eve, The Scarlet Woman, Stool Pigeon, and many more (and many of these are "lost" films which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist). This book shows that Columbia was starting to come into its own as a significant studio, because it is filled with all full-page full-color ads, many signed by artists, with some fantastic artwork. It is also very well worth noting that Frank Capra had not yet achieved his fame as a master director, for he is not even mentioned on the ads for the movies he directed (in the following year, Columbia would begin promoting him in the ads, and soon after, he would be one of the most mentioned and pictured people in each of the campaign books). Note that also this year, Columbia made a small version of this book (it measured 5" x 7", and only had small fold-out black & white ads). No doubt they sent this large deluxe book to major theaters, but only sent the little version to smaller theaters! Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Finally, note that campaign books in general are extremely rare, and the best of them have often sold for hundreds of dollars, and in the case of the very finest, thousands of dollars!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only once previously auctioned an example of this campaign book, and that was in 2015, when it auctioned for $1,255. That was the "regular" version, while this one is a special example of the book that was personalized to Columbia producer Samuel J. Briskin (see below). However, this example of the book has serious condition issues (see below), so bear that in mind before bidding on it. Note that the studios would often prepare the most elaborate of these campaign books in both hardcover and softcover versions. In addition to this, they would sometimes have just a few examples of each bound in a deluxe hardcover binding, and sometimes the names of top theater owners or top executives would be professionally imprinted in the bottom right of the cover, and then those special deluxe hardcover books would be presented to those happy recipients! In the case of this particular book, it was presented to "Samuel J. Briskin", who produced 18 of Columbia's movies this year, so naturally, he would get his own personalized version of the book!

Note: We have 13 images of the campaign books in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 13 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 3.

Condition: fair. The book is complete and has the added hardcover binding described above. The interior book is not attached to the hardcover binding. It has a very significant and unfortunate defect. Most of the ads have pencil marks on them (some of them are small X's and some of them are large X's over the entire page, sometimes with other pencil marks as well. Some of the pencil marks are quite distracting, and some are fairly light. A few of the ads have no pencil marks, but not many. We doubt that the pencil marks can be simply erased, and it might be very costly to try to restore the pages with them, so bear this very significant defect in mind before bidding on this book.
