An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Bela Lugosi was one of the top two horror actors from the 1930s (along with Boris Karloff) in movies such as Dracula, Island of Lost Souls, The Wolf Man, The Body Snatcher, and the Black Cat. His portrayal of Dracula was so memorable, that it caused movie makers to only want him to play similar roles, and in the minds of many horror fans, there is no other Dracula BUT Bela Lugosi! Note that Mr. Lugosi was born in what was then Austria-Hungary, but is now Romania. He passed away in 1956 at the age of 73. Important Added Info: Don Marlowe represented Bela from January 1948 through January 1949. Small ads in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Players Directory Bulletin list Bela Lugosi as represented by the "Don Marlowe Agency." During that time, the agency went through 3 different phone numbers (HO-8422, CR-4-6211 and GR-8367), possibly indicating that Don Marlowe's business got in trouble and had to keep changing his phone number! Our consignor purchased this deluxe photo, which is printed on double weight paper stock, from an eBay seller. That seller said on the auction that he purchased it from Marlowe himself after Lugosi's death. Note that the back of the still has two stamps from Don Marlowe's agency, and also has "Lugosi private" handwritten in pencil. The eBay seller said that he compared this handwriting to that of Lugosi's known handwriting, and he thinks that it was written by Lugosi himself (and he accounts for it being written slightly differently from Lugosi's known autographs, because Lugosi WASN'T "signing" his name, but was merely writing it quickly. All of this is sheer speculation, and we are not saying that it is surely Lugosi's handwriting on the back of the still, only that it is a possibility. We are certain this is an original Lugosi deluxe photo that dates from the 1950s at the latest, and is possibly from the 1930s or 1940s (if it does date from before 1948, then Marlowe stamped it after acquiring it, but it is certainly possibly Marlowe had it printed in 1948 while he represented Lugosi, and just used a younger photo of him (we have also auctioned an 8" x 10" version of this, so it seems that Marlowe used this in trying to get Lugosi booked). So there are uncertainties about this, and bear those in mind before bidding, but this certainly is a great montage image of Lugosi. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good. There is uneven coloration across the top, but that is in the printing. There is slight discoloration in the top edge of the image, which is an acquired defect (see our image). Otherwise, the still is in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
