An Original Vintage Theatrical Color 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Mister Wu, the 1927 William Nigh silent China family relationship romantic melodrama ("From the play by Henry Maurice Vernon and Harold Owen..."; "Adaptation and continuity by Lorna Moon"; with Lon Chaney playing a dual role, as the Mandarin Mister Wu and his aged grandfather; in the movie, Mr. Wu's daughter falls in love with a Westerner, with predictable results) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role), Renee Adoree, Louise Dresser, Holmes Herbert, Ralph Forbes, and Anna May Wong. Note that Anna May Wong would have been perfect for the female lead in this movie (playing Chaney's granddaughter), but because that character had a love scene with a "white" man, MGM cast white Renee Adoree in the role (and she wore "yellowface" makeup to portray an Asian woman), so that audiences wouldn't have to see an interracial romance. Thankfully, the prejudices of that time no longer exist! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: good to very good. This wonderful still was likely used in a newspaper or magazine, because there is fine touch up paint on both stars' eyebrows and in the center of each of their eyes.
