He was created in 1960, and was similar to James Bond, but was not a secret agent or a spy as those words are usually defined (he was more of a straight executioner of government enemies). There were 27 books in the series between 1960 and 1993. In 1965, Columbia Pictures bought the rights to eight of the novels. They changed the character to where the movies were more like spy spoofs, especially because Dean Martin played the lead role. Four movies were made starting with "The Silencers" in 1966, followed by "Murderer's Row", also in 1966, followed by "The Ambushers" in 1967, and "The Wrecking Crew" in 1969. The series was incredibly popular, but it likely ended because Dean Martin tired of the movies (and making movies in general, because he only made a few after that point). An interesting bit of trivia is that these movies were produced by Irwin Allen, who had been partners with Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli in the 1950s and early 1960s. Broccoli wanted to buy the rights to the James Bond books, and Allen disagreed, and that ended their partnership, and of course, Allen was proved to be massively wrong! So he in part bought the rights to these books to make competing movies to the James Bond films, produced by his ex-partner. Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades
