An Original Vintage Linenbacked Austrian Three-Sheet Poster (measures 49" x 108" [124 x 274 cm]) (Learn More)

Mistinguett (born Jeanne Bourgeois) was a French singer, dancer and actress from the 1900s to the 1930s. She was born in 1875, and she was a dancer in music halls when she was a teenager. She became a leading French stage star (both singing and dancing), and in 1911, she "stole" Maurice Chevalier from his dance partner and girlfriend, Frehel, and Mistinguett and Chevalier became major stars (poor Frehel tried to commit suicide and had drug and alcohol problems the rest of her life). Mistinguett and Chevalier performed the 'danse de apaches', and they appeared in two movies together. Chevalier then served in World War I, and he started his solo act after the war. Mistinguett appeared solo in movies and on stage for many years. She passed away in 1956 at the age of 80.
Artist: Weninger
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Austrian three-sheet, which measures 49" x 108" (it was printed in three sections, designed to overlap). Several decades ago, a large collection of similar Austrian three-sheets were auctioned at a New York City auction house, and we have not auctioned any other Austrian three-sheets than ones that originated from this amazing find (and it seems that there was only one of each poster found). We can't say for certain that this poster was from that collection, but it seems incredibly likely, and it may well be the only example of this poster that has survived.

Note that this poster ships in a very long tube (at least 33" long, but possibly 50" long or more). Therefore the shipping for this poster will be more than that for a poster that ships in a tube 32" or shorter, and possibly much more. Please bear this added shipping expense in mind before bidding on this poster. You can tell how long of a tube this poster needs to ship in by looking at the shorter dimension of its length and width and then adding 4" to that (so a 47" x 63" poster will need to ship in a 51" long tube).

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Each of the three sections had some pretty minor fold wear. There were a few creases and tears in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
