An Original 1934 (from the first release of this movie in the Netherlands) Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Dutch Movie Poster (measures 23 1/2" x 34 3/4" [60 x 88 cm]) (Learn More)

Flying Down to Rio, the classic 1933 Thornton Freeland South America Rio De Janeiro Brazil airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle musical ("Musical Romance Staged in the Clouds..."; "Too big for the world... So they staged it in the clouds... Too beautiful for words... So they set it to music!"; "Come, take a joy ride through the sky!") starring Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Paul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, and Blanche Friderici. Note that this was the first of the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, which explains why they were fourth and fifth billed, and not pictured on any poster art!

Important Added Info: Note that this great Dutch poster (which happily has the title in English!) has an extremely similar image to that of the U.S. one-sheet, except that one of the two planes carrying girls has been removed, as have all of the credits other than Dolores Del Rio. Also, the image has been shifted down to create a large area at the top which is not blank, but which likely was intended for theaters to use for their play dates information. But that first release U.S. one-sheet costs a staggering amount of money, beyond the reach of all but the wealthiest of collectors, so this poster (with its similar image) is likely the best hope the vast majority of collectors have to obtain a first release poster from this classic title! Note that this poster has been paperbacked.

What IS paperbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had a circular Dutch stamp in the upper right blue background area. It also had two tears at the middle crossfold and tiny bits of paper loss in the vertical foldline in the 2" above and below that crossfold. It had some dot stains to the left and right of the top crossfold (in the blue background) and a dot stain above the right end of the top horizontal fold, also in the blue background. It had a Y-shaped tear near the middle of the right border, extending into the blue background to the right of the blue star. It had a stain in the blue background to the right of the end of the title. It had pinholes and stains around the edges and some smudges in the top right corner of the yellow background. None of these defects are all that distracting. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to paperbacking. The person who owned the poster chose to have it simply backed onto paper with no restoration at all. Certainly, this great poster can be framed and enjoyed exactly as it is, or any talented restorer could perform additional restoration to the above defects (which are primarily in the border and background areas), and afterward, this poster will look wonderful!
