Date Sold 8/23/2015Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 40 Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More) The Bridge on the River Kwai, the classic 1958 David Lean (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) English/U.S. World War II (WWII) military Japanese prison camp sabotage thriller ("Decades from now, motion pictures will proudly claim to be 'In the great tradition of 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'"; "A masterpiece of filmcraft that you will want to see again and again!"; "Screenplay by Pierre Boulle Based on His Novel"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award) starring William Holden, Alec Guinness (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Jack Hawkins, Sessue Hayakawa (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; but should have WON the Academy Award), James Donald, Ann Sears, and Geoffrey Horne (billed as "introducing Geoffrey Horne"). Note that this film premiered in England in October of 1957, and had a very limited release in the U.S. in December (to qualify for the Academy Awards), but the U.S. wide-release took place in 1958. Also, note that Pierre Boulle is credited as the screenwriter and won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay despite his lack of involvement in the movie itself (he wrote the novel the movie is based on). The actual screenwriters were Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, but they were blacklisted and ineligible for screen credit. In 1984, the Academy retroactively awarded the Oscar to Wilson and Foreman. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that normally on our groups of more than eight black and white stills, we only picture eight of them (because of time limitations). But because this auction is for a really nice group of 40 different black and white stills from this classic movie, we have provided images of ALL of them and there are no duplicate images! Note also that each still has a studio stamp on the back dating the still's year of production to 1957! Condition: very good. Some of the stills have minor edge defects including some creases or minor handling wear. Several have a few minor creases or light scuffs that are mostly only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light. One has small paper loss in the upper right corner (pictured at lower right in our last image). Otherwise, the large set of stills is in pretty nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
