An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Big Boy, the 1930 Alan Crossland Kentucky Derby horse racing musical comedy ("Odds on choice in the laugh handicap"; "The laugh sweepstakes of the year!") starring Al Jolson, Claudia Dell, Louise Closser Hale, Lloyd Hughes, Eddie Phillips, and Noah Beery Sr. Note that this is a bizarre movie, to say the least! In all other Jolson movies, he appears as a white man (often in blackface singing), but in this one movie, he actually attempts to play a black African American (wearing blackface), and all the other actors do not notice this! The reason Jolson made this movie is because his films were not doing so well at the box office, and this was one of his big Broadway smashes. In the movie, he is a stable boy at a southern plantation, and he wants to ride the plantation's prize horse in the Kentucky Derby, but he ends up working as a singing waiter, and manages to ride the horse and win! There is also a long Civil War flashback, where Jolson's grandfather outsmarts a bigoted white plantation owner! At the end of the movie, Jolson, without his make-up, introduces the rest of the cast, and sings a few songs. But because Jolson plays a black man in this movie, it is virtually never shown! Now we have been consigned a really cool collection of mostly 1930s 8x10 stills that show theater fronts and lobby displays (many of them have a stamp from a Boston company on the back, so it seems likely that most or all of them are from theaters in the Boston area)! All of those stills are in this set of auctions (in separate auctions). So this is a rare opportunity to purchase vintage 8x10 stills showing theater fronts from the 1930s (and since we have only auctioned a tiny number of these over all our years of auctioning, there is a good chance that it will be a long time before we have more of them). Condition: very good to fine. The still is in very nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
