An Original Vintage 8 1/8" x 10 1/4" [21 x 26 cm] News Photo (Learn More)

George Herman 'Babe' Ruth was a legendary professional sports baseball player from the 1910s to the 1930s, playing with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. Nicknamed "the Bambino" and "the Sultan of Swat", he is perhaps one of the most famous baseball players to have played the game, having led the Red Sox and the Yankees to a total of seven World Series championships. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 only a year after his retirement! Ruth passed away in 1948 at the age of 53.
Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful news photo comes from 1927, when both Paul Whiteman and Babe Ruth had been working out at the same gym trying to lose weight. Whiteman suggested they have a mock boxing match, and The Babe accepted, and it received much publicity, and famed composer John Philip Sousa agreed to serve as the referee, and Christy Walsh was Babe Ruth's corner man (also in the photo is Artie McGovern, owner of the gym). Whiteman weighed 254 pounds and The Babe 217, and they danced around for a while and then Whiteman was "knocked out"!

Condition: good. There is an ink stain on Ruth's shirt and a mostly transparent stain in the background to the left of his head. There are some dot ink stains in the middle of the left of the still, with a few in the bottom right. In spite of these defects, this great photo can still be displayed and enjoyed, or certainly, restoration could be performed.
