An Original 1957 (from the first release of this movie in Australia) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13 1/4" x 30 1/4" [34 x 77 cm]) (Learn More)

Forbidden Planet, the classic 1956 Fred McLeod Wilcox science fiction (sci-fi) outer space robot monster thriller ("Amazing!"; "In Cinemascope and Color"; "Based on the story by Irving Block & Allen Adler"; very loosely adapted from William Shakespeare's "The Tempest"; about space men who journey to a distant planet, and they find that all the members of the original expedition have died, except for one man and his daughter, and they have discovered the secrets of a long lost civilization called "The Krell", which dwarfs anything humans have ever discovered, but there is a very dark side to those secrets that is soon revealed) starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, Warren Stevens, Jack Kelly, Richard Anderson, Earl Holliman (as the cook, who was put in the movie for comic relief), Robby the Robot (billed as "Introducing Robby the Robot"), James Drury, and Frankie Darro (who was inside the robot suit until he was fired early in the production for showing up inebriated and almost damaging the expensive prop). Note that after Robby the Robot appeared in this movie, he had another movie role in "The Invisible Boy", and then he appeared in a slightly modified version as the robot in TV's "Lost in Space". On November 21, 2017, the original "Robby the Robot" was auctioned, and it sold for $5.375 million!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that, while this poster was printed in Australia, it was specifically made to be used in New Zealand. This was not an uncommon practice and we have seen many different titles where separate posters were printed for the Australian and New Zealand releases. This poster lacks the triangular printed rating which can be found on the Australian version of the poster, although the person who altered the printing plate did not do a good job, so there are still traces of the triangular rating in the lower right, as can be seen in our image. The poster also has a stamped rating in the bottom right, which was the common practice in New Zealand at this time.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had minor wear on the folds and a New Zealand rating stamp in the lower right white background area. Someone wrote the word "color" in lowercase letters in the robot's waist. They also wrote something else in the top right background area below the word "PLANET". Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Either the person who restored the poster painted over the writing in the top right background area, or more likely, it was already painted over when it got to the restorer. We say this because they didn't do any restoration over the lightly written "color" in the robot's waist or to the New Zealand rating. The person pretty much backed the poster "as is". One could either display it as it is, or certainly, additional restoration could be performed. In any event, please read the above carefully and look at our super-sized image before bidding on this poster.
