An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 20" x 27 1/2") (Learn More)

Wallace Bros. Wild Trained Animal Circus, the circa 1943 circus poster starring "Captain Engerer and his Fighting Jungle Beasts". Because Captain Engerer is billed, we are able to date this poster to 1943 or 1944, because we found an Internet entry (from his nephew!) which states that he was with the Wallace Bros. circus during those years. His nephew says that his uncle was billed as "the world's only one armed lion tamer", but if so, either the poster artist did not know this, or he lost his arm AFTER this poster was made! It is sad to note that Captain Engerer died in 1964 when he was killed by his own lion! If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.

Condition: good to very good. It appears the poster was once taped to a wall, because there are tape stains on all four borders and some tiny areas of paper loss and surface paper loss where the tape was roughly removed. The poster was folded once in each direction, and there are some creases on both foldlines. There was a semi-circular tear in the middle of the right border that went into the furthest tiger at right, and there is surface paper loss above the tiger's image. There were some faint stains and smudges throughout the poster. Someone mounted the poster on to a very thin linen, likely many years ago, but without doing any restoration. If I owned this cool poster, I would surely have it professionally backed on to a proper linen backing. After proper restoration and backing, the poster will look great, and there won't be very much paint restoration on the poster at all!
