An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 33 1/4" [60 x 84 cm]) (Learn More)

A Day at the Races, the classic 1937 Sam Wood horse racing sports gambling screwball comedy ("The year's big laugh, music and girl show!") starring the Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, and Harpo Marx), Allan Jones, Maureen O'Sullivan, Margaret Dumont, Esther Muir, Douglass Dumbrille, Sig Ruman, Leonard Ceeley, and Dorothy Dandridge (in an uncredited early role, in a sequence where a large number of young black African American men and women sing with Harpo). Note that this movie includes the classic comedy sequence where Groucho tries to buy a horse racing tip from Chico's Tootsie-Frootsie ice cream cart!

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned this poster once before, and that was 23 years ago, when it auctioned for $1,955! The art on it is unsigned, but it certainly looks exactly like the work of Al Hirschfeld, who did most of the U.S. posters for this movie. But because it is unsigned, we don't want to say for certain that it is Hirschfeld art. If anyone knows for sure either way about the artist, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this is a rare "pre-War" Belgian poster. Prior to World War II, Belgian posters were much larger than the ones from after the war, and they are extremely rare (because during WWII, there was a massive paper shortage in Belgium, and they took virtually every poster and map, and printed new posters on the backs of them!).

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had some faint scuffs and unevenness, mostly in the solid black areas (most notably in Groucho's mustache and eyebrows, Chico's eyebrows, and the black background at the bottom of the poster, but also slightly in other parts of the poster). It likely had something to do with the black ink they used. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed. The scuffs in the black areas are truthfully only noticeable when the poster is tilted to the light (and is likely true of all examples of this poster). When viewed in a normal way, the poster looks great and will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall!
