An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

Dancing Lady, the 1933 Robert Z. Leonard romantic love triangle stage acting dancing musical comedy ("The new sensational musical romance!"; Crawford is an actress in a low class dance show, and she gets arrested, and rich Tone gets her a better job, but Gable, who runs that show, falls for her; Healy is Gable's assistant and Fred Astaire and Nelson Eddy appear as themselves) starring Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Franchot Tone, May Robson, Winnie Lightner, Fred Astaire (without Ginger Rogers!), Robert Benchley, Ted Healy and his Stooges (Moe Howard, Curly Howard, Larry Fine; his "stooges" would soon form their own act and become immortal as "The Three Stooges"), Sterling Holloway, and Nelson Eddy. Note that this was Fred Astaire's very first movie, which means that Joan Crawford was his first movie dance partner (and it was also the first movie where he wore a top hat and tails!).

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this three-sheet! Also note that this poster was printed by "Leader Press". In the 1930s, a constant headache for theaters was being sure of having movie posters for their current releases. Often, the posters would travel with the actual film prints, and sometimes the theater before them might have forgotten to include the poster, it might have been defaced or torn, etc. If a theater didn't have posters, it was very frustrating! Several companies began in the 1930s (Leader Press, the "other company", Woolever Press, etc) that made posters of their own for new releases, and they would provide a back up for theaters in case they didn't get a studio issued poster. Often the posters from these companies (with the exception of the "other company") were silk-screen posters, but they were often quite attractive, and virtually always had a completely different design from the regular studio issued poster. It is an absolute fact that posters from these companies are far more rare than the regular studio issued posters. It is also a certainty that these posters were issued when the movies were first released. In fact, they were created PRIOR to the movie's release, so that they could serve as teaser or advance posters (theaters rarely got the studio issued posters before receiving the actual movie). We have located an extremely rare original advertisement for Leader Press posters which clearly states that they were available to theaters a full two weeks prior to each movie's release.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster had pretty minor wear on the folds. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. Unfortunately, a some point after it was mounted, the left 3" to 4" of the poster came into contact with water, and it is now heavily water stained in that area, both in the poster itself and in the linen. This is almost completely in the blank white border and orange background area, but it does affect a few of the letters. A talented restorer could remove this from the linen and reverse the damage, but bear this in mind before bidding on this extremely scarce poster.
